For immediate release
January 27, 2011

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan — The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), along with members of the Red Tape Reduction Commission, today met with representatives of the Saskatoon-area business community to discuss federal red tape challenges they face—in particular those challenges faced by small business.

"Our Government's first priority is the economy and we understand that small businesses are a key part of driving Canada's economic engine," said Minister of State Moore. "Through red tape reduction consultations like today's, we are listening to the concerns and ideas of those who know first-hand where red tape is most problematic: the small businesses themselves."

The Red Tape Reduction Commission was first announced in Budget 2010: Leading the Way on Jobs and Growth. Its mandate includes identifying irritants to business stemming from federal regulatory requirements. The focus is on those burdens that have a clear detrimental effect on growth, competitiveness and innovation. The Commission will also recommend options that address the issues on a long-term basis, while ensuring that the environment and the health and safety of Canadians are not compromised in the process.

"Through our Red Tape Reduction Commission, we're working to ensure that entrepreneurs can focus less on paperwork and more on growing their business and creating jobs. I'd like to thank the participants of today's consultations for their valuable input and look forward to hearing more from Canada's entrepreneurs as the Commission travels across the country in the coming weeks and months," concluded Minister of State Moore.

The Commission will hold consultations with Canadians and Canadian businesses during a series of round tables across the country. An online consultation process is also taking place at www.reduceredtape.gc.ca before the Commission issues its recommendations to the Government in the fall of 2011.
